The funnel effect is just a natural implication of having different levels of cohesiveness between bodies of air and plasma.
Because of the presence of static electricity in the atmosphere, all bodies of air—and/or air mixed with water—exhibit varying degrees of this cohesiveness. This static interaction at the boundary layers is what physically manifests as the funnel.
